About us

Who We Are


The African Centre for AI Governance and Oversight (ACAIGO) is a pan-African research and policy institute dedicated to advancing responsible AI governance across the continent. We work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, law, public policy, and digital governance to develop legal and regulatory frameworks that foster innovation, strengthen accountability, and address Africa's evolving technological priorities.

Through research, policy advisory, regulatory compliance, and capacity building, we support governments, regulators, businesses, academia, civil society, and international organizations in navigating the legal, regulatory, and governance challenges presented by AI and other emerging technologies. Our work spans AI governance, data protection and privacy, cybersecurity, digital policy, and legislative reform, combining African perspectives with international best practices.
By bridging research, policy, and practice, we help shape effective governance frameworks that enable the responsible development, deployment, and use of AI across Africa.

Jane Awuor

Principal Advisor, Privacy & AI Governance

Jane Awuor is a privacy and AI governance leader shaping ACAIGO’s advisory work across Africa and globally. She is a certified privacy and AI governance professional.

Chrispus Owiti

Chief Research Officer, AI & Digital Policy

Chrispus Owiti is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and serves as Chief AI Research Strategist at ACAIGO, where he leads research and policy initiatives aimed at shaping Africa’s approach to AI governance.

Gakii Kalaine 

Lead, Data Protection & Privacy

Kalaine is our Lead Consultant on Data Protection and a recognized expert in legal compliance and data governance.

Maria Lodhi

AI Research & Technical Analyst

Maria is an AI Research & Technical Analyst at ACAIGO with an MSc in Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence from Queen Mary University of London. She provides technical expertise to support ACAIGO’s research and policy work on AI governance.

Christabel Atieno

Head of Legal & Compliance

Christabel is a seasoned Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and Certified Professional Mediator leading ACAIGO’s legal and compliance function.

Charles Ombiro

Systems & Network Administrator

Charles is a Systems and Network Administrator and cybersecurity professional with experience in IT infrastructure, network management, and security operations.
